In-System Device Programmers
In-System Device Programmers (In System Programming) write devices on-board, it means already mounted on the target PCB. They use standard serial interfaces JTAG, I2C, SPI, BDM, MON, ICC, SCI, UART, …
Not so long ago, it seemed that in-system programming is ideal solution that will completely eliminate in-socket programmers from the market. However devices can be written during final structural or functional testing without investment in traditional programming equipment. Consumable adapters, ZIF sockets would not necessary. But new problems have appeared:
- Target system has to be developed to avoid electrical conflicts on lines used for programming
- In-system programming takes more time than in-socket. Huge capacities of present flash memories slow down production process while they are written on production line.
- Special adapter (kind of ISP programmer) is necessary to connect host PC with a target system and it should be multi-channel one to speed up programming process by writing devices concurrently.
So in-socket programmers are doing well.
In-system programming has a big advantage against in-socket one – easy integration with a structural or functional testing on production lines. There are several standards and interfaces used for ISP. One of the most popular is boundary-scan technology and JTAG interface used within. Equipment used for that is often called as JTAG Programmers.
